Remember, colposcopy is useful for patients as it can offer a better cervical view. As a result, doctors can closely observe the cervix with potential changing possibilities in the tissues and cells.

As you can get on your nerves after the suggestion, it is better to gain some knowledge on colposcopy procedures from this blog.

What is the meaning of abnormal Pap smear?

An abnormal Pap smear test indicates that there is certainly no change in your cervical cells. The results can range from cancerous or severe, moderate to mild. Therefore, it is important to determine and follow up on the results to get the right treatment.

In case you left it untreated then pre-cancerous changes can lead to cervical cancer. Only with early detection along with treatment, can you increase the survival chance using non-invasive treatment options. A colonoscopy exam helps in determining what is going on in your body and what your next steps are!

    What is colposcopy?

Colposcopy is the process in which a doctor can obtain a zoomed view of vulvar areas, vaginal tissues and cervix. During the examination, the doctor inserts a colposcope into the vagina after the application of vaginal solutions. In this way, they can figure out the abnormal cells and evaluate whether you further need a biopsy or not. The colposcope is something which everyone sees at the doctor’s clinic.

It is an instrument on top of a metal box and is shiftable to anywhere in the office. It has an antennae which comes out like an arm of the robot and in the end, you can notice the key thing- a binocular-type microscope which offers a clear view of the cervix by emitting light.

    Colposcopy preparation

Initially, you need to consult with the doctor regarding your expectations at the time of the exam. Moreover, you will find the following steps more helpful:

    • Take a family member or friend to support you
    • During waiting for the appointment make a list of the concerns and questions you have in your mind. In case you are feeling nervous then ask whoever is with you to remind you to follow up the questions in front of the doctor.
    • As the process will not hurt certain women can experience slight pain or discomfort in case a biopsy is necessary. Always take someone who will assist you in managing the pain before the test. Consult with the doctor regarding this before undergoing the test.
    • In many cases, women experience bleeding after and at the time of the procedure! So, bringing your own tampons during the appointment is absolutely safe.

Your expectations at the time of the process

During the appointment, you will need to lie down on the table, keeping your legs wide and in stirrups. The same position is necessary for a Pap smear test as well. The doctor will insert a speculum for a clear observation of the cervix. Many clinics offer affordable private colposcopy, using the latest technology in the procedure. Instead of inserting the device into the vagina, it rests outside, providing a high-resolution image of the inside.

Then, the doctor will apply a vinegar solution to the cervix to easily identify abnormal cells due to the change in their color. In case there is any abnormality, the doctor will suggest you perform a biopsy, the results of which you can expect within a week.

    Determination from the procedure

A colposcopy exam will come your way when you undergo a biopsy and the results come out as:

    • Cervical cancer
    • CIN III- Carcinoma in-situ, severe dysplasia
    • CIN II- Moderate dysplasia
    • CIN I- Mild dysplasia (abnormal cells)

Mostly, obtaining abnormal results will allow the doctor to observe your condition closer mainly using frequent Pap smears. Many times, they also perform LEEP for the removal of abnormal cells.

    Follow-up and aftercare tips

After performing a private colposcopy, you will experience coffee grind, black vaginal discharge or mild bleeding. It is because of medication which has been used at the time of colposcopy. If you performed a biopsy then abstain from sex for a week after colposcopy. Apart from that, you can continue enjoying life as normal.

While you are taking birth control you need to continue it just like a prescription. Also if needed, make use of the tampons anytime. When you receive a negative Pap smear report, colposcopy is the only easiest solution for evaluation of the next steps.

If you suspect any issue, consult with the doctor and perform a Pap smear test. On obtaining the negative result, you need to perform a colposcopy for better diagnosis and treatment and that too within time.
